Danny Nelms: A Journey Through His Career
I’ve spent more than 30 years helping organizations connect their people strategy to business success. Since 2010, I’ve led Work Institute, where we focus on improving employee retention and engagement, and I’ve co-authored two books sharing what I’ve learned along the way. Before that, I held leadership roles in healthcare, manufacturing, and professional services — experiences that shaped my belief that great workplaces start with great leaders.

Starting Out
Began my career part-time with Arthur Andersen while finishing college, then continued full-time after graduation. Soon after, I stepped into HR with Renaissance Hotels in Nashville. From there, I built experience across multiple industries, often in organizations navigating major change.
2005
Leading HR
Reached my first head of HR role in manufacturing, guiding the company through intense challenges and even bankruptcy — one of the greatest learning experiences of my career. Later, I led HR for a healthcare company that was ultimately acquired by Walgreens.
2010
Work Institue
Joined Work Institute when founder Tom Mahan asked me to take the helm. In the wake of the recession, we stabilized and nearly doubled the company’s size over the next decade, helping employers listen better and retain talent.

Today
Now as CEO, I remain deeply passionate about this work. Along the way, I co-authored two books with Tom, became a frequent speaker on workforce issues, and continue to help organizations create better workplaces.

Lessons Learned Throughout My Journey
Throughout my career, I've discovered that resilience, adaptability, and resourcefulness are key to overcoming challenges. These principles have guided me and remain at the core of my personal and professional growth.
